Inpatient Pediatric Units

Pediatric Floor

LICH’s Pediatric Floor is a bright, cheerful, and supportive environment for up to 24 children (ages 0-18) and their families. Our experienced physicians and nurses are present in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Visitation guidelines allow parents to remain with their children throughout the entirety of their stay. The unit also has a well-stocked children’s playroom.

Upon admission to the unit, children undergo a thorough assessment process and are then followed by a team that includes pediatric doctors, nurses, a social worker, a nutritionist, and a New York City certified school teacher. Care is managed and coordinated by our pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Hannah Famiglietti. Besides providing excellent care, Dr. Famiglietti has a well-deserved reputation for her ability to communicate with both children and their parents in a kind and empathetic manner.

The unit cares for children with medical conditions that range from acute issues such as asthma, dehydration, and infections, to complex chronic conditions that require the support of pediatric specialists. Your child will receive top quality medical care while in LICH’s inpatient pediatric unit, in a child-friendly atmosphere.

Pediatric Emergency Department

Here at LICH, we have a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Unit, which is open to general public, regardless of insurance, 24 hours a day, every day. The unit is run by Dr. Sunil Sachdeva, a board-certified, pediatric emergency medicine physician and staffed by physicians and nurses trained in pediatrics and emergency medicine.

Patients are treated expeditiously and with care and compassion. We have the best door-to-provider time in Brooklyn and work endlessly at ensuring a positive experience in a time of crisis. Nobody looks forward to a trip to an emergency room, but we can make sure that your child receives excellent medical care in an efficient and caring manner.

Pediatric sub-specialty support (in adolescent medicine, cardiology, dental, endocrinology, infectious disease, hematology, neurology, orthopedics, otolaryngology and pulmonology) is available around the clock, and admission to our pediatric unit or intensive care unit is arranged as needed. We will also communicate with your referring primary care doctor, and you will leave with a printed discharge summary to add to your medical files.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

LICH’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is a distinct wing of the inpatient pediatric floor dedicated to providing constant monitoring for our sickest children. The chief of the PICU, Dr. Clara Giambruno, trained as a pediatric resident at North Shore University Hospital and completed her fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in 2002. She has been working at LICH since 2003.

The pediatric nurses and doctors provide ongoing communication with both the primary care doctor and the family as the sick children recuperate, and every effort is made to minimize interventions and expedite the healing process.

Neonative Intensive Care Unit

LICH is proud to have a fully staffed 26-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit available for those newborns that need our services. Led by Dr. Alice Garner, the unit offers 24/7 coverage with neonatologists, hospitalists and physicians assistants specifically trained to provide comprehensive care to our littlest ones. This care may begin with maternal consultations and preparations for high risk deliveries before the baby is born, but is also available for emergencies that arise during and after delivery.

We provide accurate and up-to-date medical information as well as compassionate support and open communication for the entire family. We are able to perform immediate resuscitation services in the delivery room when needed and are prepared to care for any newborn with unexpected health issues. Our nurses and staff are experienced caregivers, and specially trained to work in the NICU. We also have excellent sub-specialists on site, including pediatric surgeons, cardiologists, endocrinologists, and neurologists.

In addition to tending to complex medical concerns, the specialized neonatal unit is a place of growth and development, complete with the availability of early intervention services. There are follow-up clinics and arrangements made for our sickest infants, and we continue to stay involved even after their stay with us ends.
