Recent Pertussis Outbreak And Pertussis Vaccination

It is by now very well established that the whopping cough (Pertussis) is around much more than previously recognized. The immune protection, afforded by the childhood vaccination series, tends to wane with time. The main reservoir of infection, therefore, is in adolescents and adults, who often are sick with it without knowing. Pertussis is quite contagious, and babies get sick from adults. The younger the baby, the greater the chances of grave and even fatal outcome from this preventable infection. And unfortunately, a number of very young infants have died from a recent pertussis outbreak in California

We urge that all babies get their pertussis vaccinations (DTAP) as recommended by AAP at 2, 4, and 6 months. For the parents that choose to follow a delayed / split vaccination schedule, please choose the DTAP to be given on time. The baby is not fully immune until all 3 shots have been given.

It is recommended that ADULT CARETAKERS OF NEWBORN BABIES AND VERY YOUNG INFANTS also get vaccinated with a pertussis booster (TDAP, also containing a tetanus booster). We offer TDAP to parents (there is a fee), or you may inquire with your internist or obgyn.
